Imagine waking up and noticing that your entire work has been gone forever. I think is the worst feeling ever possible, working so hard to create something and then to see it destroyed by someone overnight is painful to watch.
This is exactly what happened with VFEmail.net, an unknown hacker has compromised their servers where all the email has been stored inclusive their backup. VFEmail has anounced in a twitter post that they lost everything including their backup making everyone who has account with them losing all their emails and other important files.
After just 2 hours VFEmail he announced that they find an intruder that has started to format their backup servers in order to destroy every possible backup saved by VFEmail in case something goes wrong.
However, shortly after that VFEmail confirmed that "all the disks on every server" had been wiped out, virtually erasing the company's entire infrastructure, including mail hosts, virtual machine hosts, and a SQL server cluster, within just a few hours.
Strangely, not all VMs shared the same authentication, but all were destroyed. This was more than a multi-password via ssh exploit, and there was no ransom. Just attack and destroy. — VFEmail.net (@VFEmail) February 11, 2019
The official website has now been restored and running, but all secondary domains still remain unavailable. If you are an existing user, expect to find your inboxes empty.
However after the attack they have managed to restore one of their main domain however, one of their secondary domain is still unavailable.
This is a perfect examples of a destructive attack and a good lesson for everyone that has a website not to keep their backup on any server that is connected to internet.
